“Genesee 3 – The First Super Critical Power Plant in Canada”

by Dave Conlin, Director, Generating Plant Development, EPCOR.

Genesee 3, a 450 MW output, coal fired, power plant recently commissioned by EPCOR incorporates a number of features that set new standards for thermal, coal fired generation in Canada. The furnace temperature is at 1400 0C and the steam system operates at a pressure of 26 MPa. A number of important features incorporated in the plant design make this plant compatible with today’s environmental requirements and these include: fabric filters that remove 99.8% of particulate matter; flue gas desulphurization that lowers emissions of SO2; low NOx burners that reduce emissions of NOx, nitrous oxide(s) and CO2 emissions that are 18% lower than the average Alberta coal fired power plant.

“Gasification Technologies and Applications in Canada”

by Dr. M.P(Duke) Duplessis, Senior Advisor (Energy) Alberta Energy Research Institute and Alberta Economic Development.

Price increases in most of the commonly used fossil fuels such as petroleum and natural gas have put the spotlight on the value of so called “dirty” fuels such as residual oils, petroleum cokes and yes, even coal, as potential fuel sources for power generation and other applications. A number of projects have been built and are now operating worldwide which allows these fuels to be used in a manner commensurate with today’s environmental requirements.
